Hi!

I'm going through something like this myself... I'm a crime survivor not of just one attack, but a series of attacks in various places and situations, which has kind of given me feeling of no place and nobody is safe to be around.

So, I know where you're coming from.

If you're not having to overcome any physical injury. I'd first recommend getting plenty of exercise and particularly weight training.

Look at your diet and make sure you're getting plenty of protein and Omega-3 acids. Lack of these things can cause problems like anxiety and depression.

The other thing I recommend - only once you are in a relatively safe place, 'cause this is not going to work if you are in a veritable war zone where people are trying to rob, rape and kill you constantly! - once in a safe place, look into autosuggestion or self-hypnosis.

This is beyond just meditation where you sit and say "ohm, ohm..." - this is a way to get into your subconscious and do a little re-wiring. It's a way to relax physically and get some probably much needed sleep.

I struggle with social anxiety, at times it is very embarrassing. I have a hard time eating in front of others I do not feel comfortable around and also get highly nervous when taking photos so I always come out with this crazy looking face b/c it clearly reflects my struggle inside. its kind of funny but a pain in the butt. anyway, I suggest the "social anxiety" cds from thinkrightnow.com. I am not affiliated with them in any way. I just had alot of success with them.

Suggest learning to use energy-accessing (balancing/clearing) techniques - like EFT, for instance - particularly anything that can address amygdala programming and "wernique's command" (limbic) brain (auto-defence) functions ... a deep root of 'social' (programmed) dis-ease.

snow owl, I have the same problem as you: eating in front of others. I know it's related to a pastlife trauma in my case.

I have tried EFT, but the problem is that you have to feel the emotion to clear it and I can't do that when I'm not in the situation.

Something interesting I found is Trauma Releasing Exercises(TRE) developped by dr Berceli.

This is based on observations they did on animals in the wild who never experience PTSD unlike humans and domesticated or caged animals.

When an animal in the wild has been able to flee from a traumatizing experience where they just escaped death, the animal's body goes into a trembling mode and literally shakes off the trauma.

Humans have this part of the brain too, because the body does it automatically but due to social conditioning we tend to suppress this shaking and this is how it stays locked in the body resulting in stress and PTSD.

Would be interested to know what other people's experiences are who want to try this..

I'd strongly recommmend you see an EFT Practitioner (or Reference Point Therapy Practitioner). It'll get cleaned up quickly. You can apply EFT yourself by going to EFTuniverse.com and learn for free. When you have a situation where you can't feel the anxiety when you're not in the situation, you can still apply it successfully. So when you are alone, use your imagination to think of the stressful situation.... rate your anxiety out of 10 (if you can't feel it from using your imagination, just guess - yes a guess will work!) then do some rounds then check with your imagination again.

Anyway, hope you get some releif soon.

Look into therapy and read related books. It IS all in your head, usually. A book I've been suggested and have started using is "How to Keep People from Pushing Your Buttons," a general anxiety help book by Albert Ellis. It's helped me a bit. It hasn't cured me, but I have a strong genetic predisposition to worry which unfortunately runs in my family.

The number one thing from the book that helps me is oddly just reminding myself that being worried won't help matters nor prevent things I worry about from happening, and in some cases, it actually causes issues. Thus, no reason to (excessively) worry.

You're worried about, oh, I don't know, doing something embarrassing in public. That's social anxiety, right? Slight worry, just enough to remind you that you should avoid doing something embarrassing in public, is natural and good and even evolutionarily selected for. Massive worry, however, is not going to help, so why do it? Relax, and just avoid doing what you don't want to happen.

But remember, even if it does happen, it probably isn't the end of the world. Unless of course you're some sort of world leader and messing up socially will cause another leader to fire a nuclear bomb onto your country, which I strongly doubt you are. That's really the only scenario in which panicking social anxiety could be excused, and even then, panicking social anxiety won't help prevent King Shabadabadingdong from launching a nuke at you.

You... something embarrassing... crap your pants in public. So what? Worst comes to worse, you'll be mocked. Mocking won't hurt you. Sticks and stones, man.

Social blunders will almost never cost you your life or even physical injury, unless you live in deep slums or a 3rd world country run by a dictator. If you do live in the deep slums or a 3rd world country run by a dictator, disregard this paragraph.

Above everything else, just remember: "There is no reason to do something that won't help me. Being anxious won't help me." Change it up, repeat it like a mantra. Works better for me than anything else.
