To desolate_kitten, and anyone else with wonderments of whether or not the beings they may or may not be visted by are positive or negative.
I speak from personal experience.
Some beings are negative, not neccessarily evil, but just negative.
Such as on the film 'The Sixth Sense'. The dead people are denying themselves the truth, that they are dead of this particular frquency, and so they meander around seeing what they want to see.
Some though know they're dead and try to create their own reality by influencing the living due to fear, denial, whatever, and they can attach themselves to a person's energy, they need a source of energy to stay here and some choose people.
Some living people do exactly the same thing.
There are a number of ways to find out who the potential visitors are and if they are a part of yourself or not.
I'd say the most effective way is to visualise yourself being filled with love and light(life energy) to raise your awareness, and to fill the being in question with love and light, this will raise their awareness too.
Some may fight, so Patience and Persistence is required.
It is much more effective to bring the love and light to them, rather than sending them into the light.
You can do this through visualisation-(of candles, the sun beaming through clouds, whatever you feel represents it best for you), or/and with positive affimations, asking others to send you love and light, having healing from healers, loads of ways.
By doing this which raises your awareness you will become aware of your situation and will know what to do if you need or want to change it.
Also, another help is saying to yourself/god(no diffference);
'Thank you for showing me the truth.'
You can be more specific too by saying the above and adding;
'about myself/my situation/of who I am...etc'
Saying thank you will help because you are stating that it is, and so it is, and through being grateful you will feel appreciated, since there is no difference between you and god/ whatever you call life-energy/us.
Also, if there is a visitor, by filling the visitor with love and light you will raise their awareness, and if they were just meandering around they will become aware of their spirit family and will be guided on to where they need to go next, and so then it will be out of your hands, which means you need only concern yourselves with the filling of love and light(life energy).
Protection and being closed in these times also helps from being influenced by other potential influencers.

PS- When I say I speak from personal experience, I mean, I speak of my own personal experience.
I didn't mean to say that my own experiences should be regarded above any others', just that what I am saying is from my personal experiences.
