Hi there

When we were younger we believed in "magic", in a general way of believing to mystical powers that had no specific name, just "magic".

One growing older and eager to educate himself / herself finds that this magic is just a general term and underneath this splits into different categories: Necromancy, moon magick, metaphysics, witchcraft, wicca etc. etc.
This for the inexperienced is a massive obstacle.

To be more specific: Where should one start when he wants to educate himself in the occult, how can one know which path to follow and which "side" to choose.

I'd be happy to read the views of more experienced travelers.

In time you will discover that all forms of magick have the same or simelar core elements its up to you what you want to do, the best advice I can give you is be true to your own nature and do what feels most comfterble to you.

Here we have a thinking person who dares to ask, "Why waste time crawling and stumbling through the dark alleys and the narrow passages when perhaps all I want is a fast track shortcut to the Land of Oz!".

You know, most of the Pagans I've met told me stories like, "I am of German and Norwegian descent, so it was only natural for me to pursue the Nordic Magickal Tradition. Or, "I am following in the footsteps of my grandmother who practiced Santeria".

For those of us who have no cultural or generational magickal roots, effectively we have no "grounding"; no "rooting". Then the first task can be to look for something Magickal that we identify with; something that speaks to your soul. One direction to turn for a sense of identity is Past Life Regression. Is there something that you did "before" that you can see yourself doing again in the present? On the other hand, if you don't like the idea of history repeating itself, instead use your natural talents as a guide to possible future Magickal leanings.

There is also a more "mundane" approach. If you were offered Coke Zero, Classic Coke, Diet Coke, Orange Juice, Ginger Ale, Beer or Spring Water, which would you choose and why?

I say that Magick is not all that different than all the other sorts of choices presented to us. What you choose depends upon who you are, what you value and identify with and what you need.

And if what you really need (and want) is "the fast track shortcut to the Land of Oz" then you should start by thinking that you're already in Oz and that everything else told to you to the contrary is really a Magickal Joke!

PS: Read all sorts of stories about extraordinary events and let yourself believe as much of this as you can possibly stand without going mad. A mind is a terrible thing to waste so don't waste yours on linear, mind numbing conformist notions. Limiting thoughts produce limited results.

Remember what Dr. Who said, "Like Alice, I try to believe 3 impossible things before breakfast each morning".

One thing I want to add is its not 'magic' its Magick.

Magic is stage tricks etc

Magick is what we are referring to here now.

Derestanne, I by no means ask for an "instant gratification" button, I firmly believe that "non est ad astra mollis e terris via", it's just that to the uneducated eye, it all seems very complicated, many paths.

Oh Yes, Instant Gratification; sounds so terrible! - so utterly lacking in discipline and morals! How much better for us to be sooo patient and employ uncommon, saintly discipline! Please Give Me A Break!

Just one little problem here - almost none of us knows how long our human lives are going to last. With luck 80 years or more. But many of us won't be so lucky.

If Life is a rat race then in terms of our Spiritual Development Life is a cram course. A cram course of learning before we run out of time to live!

We also know that Time Is An Illusion. One day can be as a thousand days and one lifetime can seem like a day when we look back upon it after 79 years!

And my point is - each of us probably has much less time than we think. Especially now in this time of The Quickening when the Mayan Calendar's end draws near! So avoid the trap of thinking "Instant Gratification" VS. "Saintly Patience" as both are illusions! Do your best; do it expediently; do it today!

I've tried the chaos magick, pagan/ceremonial path along with some magick rituals I invented. Maybe it is not necessary to stick to one path, but to do what works for you and what you are most interested in. Generally I try to find spells/rituals which I enjoy doing and not really worry about what paradigm it fits under...
