A German physicist named Helmut Schmidt built a device in 1969 that
allowed him
to successfully test PK ability. The heart of Schmidt's device was a
random
number generator. In those days to make a random number generator that
was truly
random, Schmidt used a radioactive substance called Strontium-90, which
created a
random strobe due to it's erratic decay. The result was a totally
random series
of lows and highs (1's and 0's).
Schmidt linked the output of his random number generator to a box with
10 lights
on it arranged in a circle. Only one light was lit at a time.
Therefore, the
light would give off an appearance of moving either clockwise or
counterclockwise
depending on the output of the random number generator. When the device
was not
being influenced by PK, it would drift in one direction or the other,
but over
time, its movement should be statistically neutral.
The subject whose PK abilities were being tested was asked to 'think'
the lights
in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. It's interesting
to note
that the people tested were not aware of the method of operation of the
device.
Schmidt's results were startling to say the least. Some people (with a
little
practice) were able to influence the motion of the lights by odds of
over 10,000
to 1.
