Assuming you're trying to strengthen the visualizing area of your brain?
I tried this for a while, it took the back burner for a while and I haven't pushed the issue since. I think I did come up with a tactic that I think might work.

My own problem was that an image would dance, flicker, not hold still if I examined it all in detail. It was as if I had to fight with my images to the point of distraction. My advice and what helped me a little.

What seemed to help me a bit (and I may want to go back to practicing again myself):

1) Try visualizing an incredibly simple object against the black. My own example was a Windows (tm) flower-box, the type where you have a cube with flat primary colors on each side. To even make it easier I flattened it into a hexagon to where I was seeing three sides in proportion.

2) Try to then hold that simple object in place for as long as you can. The colors will likely start dancing, especially similar ones and it may be incredibly aggravating - no worries, just keep it up.

It might not be the most interesting thing to do but I think starting with the most minimal data set possible, even a white plus sign or ring against black if you want to start there first, will get things started gainfully.

Visualization doesn't necessarily mean you have to see anything. You can use any sense you want. Maybe you're more auditory than visual, or maybe you're kinsethetic. Just pretending to yourself that you're talking to someone is visualizing, even though you mightn't see anything. Avoid getting hung up on this - as Nike says "Just Do It!"
