"I have followed with interest the observations on distance attunements. I have done Reiki I & II. As I understand, attunements are of a very personal nature, and a face-to-face approach is necessary. Yes, distance healing is all right...but distance attunements...I am not very sure or eager.
I understand the curiosity to try out anything. But we must remember the purpose. Reiki, like other Cosmic healing methods, is nature's best option to heal onself and others in a spirit of love and fellow-feeling. It must be enjoyed in the full glory of the Cosmic energy that surrounds us, and we must respect/accept the mystery behind it. Even mainstream medical institutions in the US and the UK are incorporating these systems with allopathic medicine, with dramatic results.
I have been practicing Reiki healing, mostly distance, for the past three years. To tell you the truth, many a times I do not even remember the prescribed Reiki symbols. But the healing is still dramatic. I believe that Reiki, like other systems, just heals you and prepares you as a healer. It is then your direct communion with nature/cosmic energy that guides you in healing in the spirit of love and service.
To trade/exchange attunements seems to me like having a beautiful flower in your hand and then plucking its leaves one by one to find out why and how it is so beautiful or fragrant. May I suggest that we try to use our hearts more than our heads.

It is with the only intention that we try to use our hearts and not our heads that I even had any interest in trading attunments with others in this group or similar groups. I do not believe we will ever understand the why or how Reiki works. It is the pureness and the intent of good that allows it to work distantly or face to face.

I had my first Reiki I attunment done distantly I am in USA ILLIONIS and he was in India. I felt very calming and I experienced a undescribeable sense of oneness with all of the universe after this, it was quite healing. An attunment is healing as well as opening so there is no harm in repeating attunments. I feel things quite intensely at times while doing healings, for both myself and on others.
I also had had my only reiki II attunment distantly from a woman in Mo. I do feel that my abilities have increased and I experienced more healing within myself after this.
My only Reiki III thus far has been distant. My Reiki teachers suggested that we practice healings and later attunments on one another within our class. I is a great learning tool and in no way even remotely like tearing the leaves or petals off a flower or any plant. More like the food and water to help the plant grow beautiful and strong. Because there is no sceptism or analyzing but more an undertstanding of our abilities to transfer (attune) others. Not to mention every attunment is a major healing in itself no matter how the attunment is done or how much ritual is used in doing such. I could do attunments on friends or neighbors but I know that none of them are ready for this and are not even thinking spiritually, so to do an attunment on them would be like tearing at a beautiful plant. Someone who would not appreciate or even try to live by the Reiki principles. Thought this would be healing to them I think that the heart must be in the right place.

Yes, about Trish mentioning about Reiki and dogs. We must not confuse between healing and attunements. I do not know whether you can give attunement to a dog! I suppose it would amount to healing. I have been lucky enough to give healing two years ago to my relation's young pup who was almost dying. He is now a healthy, loving and strong pet, and the most important member of the family!

Attuning an animal such as a dog is indeed a healing but it also transfers the energy to heal others. Just as with a human. Of course the same would be for Reiki I, II, III for an animal can not teach others Reiki but I wonder if they would be able to do Reiki II distant healing? It seems to me quite possible. Because as you mentioned yourself you do not remember all the symbols but they are quite healing anyway. So who is to say that animals can not heal others with Reiki? It is proven that animals heal people, not by the name of reiki but just them. It is used the worl over in some clinics and hospitals. Animals are not evolved as we are but they are definately more spiritual. How many people do you know that live by Reiki principles as much as them do? They will love people weather the are neglected or abused. There are exceptions of animals trained and sevearly abused just as this is so with the lower human life forms.

I did not reply to this to start any negativiy but to maybe open my mind and all of our minds to the possibilities. I know that as we can reiki on our pets with our hands we can also use our feet. I know that people who are paralyzed have received Reiki and do healings with Reiki. It is all about appreciation and unconditional love.

I am so happy that you have the courage of your conviction...and you are on a beautiful path of exploration. That's what is so important...and yes, the intention...attitude and gratitude. But sometimes the cultural context may lead to different approaches.

However, in view of the dialogue now on I talked with the person from whom I received my attuenemnt. She is a versatile healer, not just Reiki, and a clairvoyant. She tells me that she has been doing distance attunements for quite some time now. But she believes that this should be done only in the case of a person who is invaild or for some reason cannot travel and meet the Reiki Master. In that case attunement can be done by being constantly in touch with that person through internet or phone.

Well, this calls for a great degree of experience, confidence and divine
blessing (I am just using these words...may be something more may be needed!). If one is blessed, anything is possible. But for those who are still experimenting...maybe it is better to be modest!

Your Reiki teachers have suggested a wonderful way of giving attunements to one another in a group. But that is face-to-face not distance attunements.

Now about your friends and neighbours who, as you say, "none of them are ready for this and are not even thinking spiritually". In my three years of participating in Reiki activities, my experince has been that we don't have to "seek out". It just happens. Those in need may not be visibly spiritually evolved...but the spark always lurks behind the surface...and just needs that something to get on to the path of real joy and learning.

Please do not give up on your friends and neighbours so easily!!!
I believe in the dictum "Live and let live". The real principles of Reiki, as I see them, are patience, love and forgiveness. Our "self" and "ego" at times becomes a major deterrent.

Finally, Reiki, or any other healing practice, is fun. Enjoy it. Laugh...for it is not a serious business. It is all about sharing, enjoying, laughing, getting on a very special high!!!

You have put it very beautifully. Pets, including dogs, are great healers. But maybe I have not reached that evolved stage to comprehend the attunement dimension when it comes to pets. However, I would say that more exploration on that front would be exciting.

Dear Swaraaj,

Thank you for trying to see things from my point of view. Also for taking the time to discuss this with your teacher. I would have loved to have my all of my Reiki attunments done in person. Unfortunately I was not able to afford to travel to India or the other area from which I received my attunments. I do intend to have this done in person later when time is more available and predictable. I have saw where our local community college is offering classes and attunments. I also have had the opportunity to talk with a lady who lives about 45 min from me and who does attunments I have got her cell phone# and am intending to call her when I will be able to attend her weekend class.

I have not given up on anyone for I am ever the opptimist. That was always one of my biggest problems. I have been reading about Reiki and many other types of healing from about the age of 15. I have always been a very spiritual person but my life has reinforced this to me.

I have spent my whole life trying to help others and using affirmations and visualizations. I help those who others have already given up on. This does not always work out for the best for me and actually I was hoping that Reiki would allow me to have the unattached attitude so that others could not harm me.

I was born an empath and have some psychic abilities that I tried to control when younger, tried to get rid of when a littel older, didn't have time for. I have now come to the point where I have no need to conrtol it, know I can not totally get rid of it, know that it's there and if I do not take the time to acknowlede it then it does harm myself and others sometimes.

I am a 34 year old woman now, but the first time I remember reading about Reiki I was 24 I had just lost 2 of my children and so was not a complete person. I am really sorry it took me so long to actually go through with the attunments. I think I have needed them for 10 years but in that time I have learned and relearned many things that have proven very helpful and familure with my reiki lessons.

I have done hands on healings for about 6 years but Reiki per say has only been in my life for 6 months. I know that this will be an every evolving journey.

Wow I have not checked back here in quite some time sorry Deepthinker I was not ignoring you just got a little more going on right after I joined this group.

I have been reading other post in the meanwhile. I think that at this time I need to do some serious self healing but there are posts on Reiki and learning and recommendations in the Energy Post on Reiki.

I know that I have also read several other of your posts in these message boards.

I was offline for a little while a couple months in total so now I have to go back and try to see if I have not replied to other posts:(.
