Hi
If you get an attunement eg Reiki from someone over the internet, like some of the free attunements on offer on some sites or ones for sale on eBay
could it potentially be damaging to you if the person didn't know what they were doing?

yes.
If that person is not vibrating at a high frequency, they can transfer all types of nasties to you. In fact they can set up entities to feed on you whether intentionally or not i don't know. I happened to me. be careful, you don't need an attunement to work with energy.
try doing Qi Gong, Tai chi it will start moving your energy enough for you to be able to feel it.

I thought that might be the case. do you think I could dowse to find out if the person offering the attunement is Ok.
I've started working through Robert Bruce's Energy Work book I'm hoping it will prove good.

robert bruces workbook is pretty good. I was assisting someone a few years that wanted to have OBE and we used that workbook. He built his energy up and we were able to visit on the astral.

I would not try the dowsing because it is hard to know what is influencing it. Also not to scare you but you don't know if you yourself are under influence.

Once you start building up your energy, any sorts of attachments, dark energies etc start to clear out of your system. It is like the energy is not moving and then it is moving and clearing up stuff around you and inside you. If you are clarivoyant you will start to see a lot more.

At that point it will be easier for you to read someones energy, although i feel that you have already can do this. You already knew the answer to the question you asked. My advice to you is to trust the energy that you read, it always right. I have learned this lesson the hard way, i hope your path is easier.

My friend got reiki attunement 1 and 2 when i did psychic diagnosis on him he had a very powerful hindu entity attached to him that is feeding on him but on the same time she is experienced in energy work and helpingh him in his healing when i did clear this entity his reiki power faded so i don't know if attunement is a way where a master directs entities to the student to open his chakras and clear them but it seems that some of these entities get attached to the receiver and start feeding on him and at the same time helping in healing especially hindu djinn entities are excellent in energy work
