What do you think the next 50 years will bring? Will science mellow a little from its brutal, Dawkins-like Materialism? As things like the Large Hadron Collidor at CERN are built and as Physics delves ever deeper into the mysteries of matter, consciousness and the Universe could we find a spiritual realm actually proved by science itself?
How about the old mind/body problem? Could it be discovered that consciousness is not just a product of the brain but exists apart from it somehow- interacting with it in some way?
The average scientist at the moment would say this: "we are a product of evolution by natural selection. Life has always been a brutal struggle for survival and is meaningless and pointless. There is no God or higher plan. In fact there is nothing beyond/behind the material realm. The Universe does not know we are here and does not care. You are your brain- it is the source of consciousness and when it dies you die and nothing remains but your rotting corpse.". Science is the ultimate authority for most intelligent, educated people, not religion. But might science get a little mystical in the next 50 years? Might science start telling us some astonishing things are hard fact- things we'd expect to hear from a theologian?
Ken Wilber wrote "In the past a scientist would say 'of course I don't believe in Spirit I'm a scientist'. In the future he may say 'of course I believe in Spirit, I'm a scientist' "
So what do you predict for 2040/ 2050/ 2060? |

Wow Moksha, you have several discussion points in that one post!
I'd like to start by saying that I don't believe 50 years is long enough for our planet to truly change its course in terms of materialism. I do believe the next 50 to 100 years will start to pose much harder questions which humanity is going to have to face. For example, within the next 20 years or so, genetic engineering is going to explode in terms of progress. As our computers become faster and faster, we become that much more equipped to be able to understand how our DNA is structured and how to manipulate it. Every generation lately seems to have to decide if they believe something is spiritually inspired or naturally selected. Once we are able to choose what our children look like, describe their aptitudes, and pay to eliminate the health risks, I am sure there will be many people confused when trying to understand how we can be spiritual beings when there is so much we can manipulate.
That being said, I think there will be a another side of science that begins to go down the opposite path where traditional physics doesn't make sense. Or, it may be the case that theoretical physics and spirituality finally start to overlap. Many people already believe this is the case with Quantum Physics because of an observer being able to affect the outcome (or witness an outcome depending on your perspective). Very soon physicists will start up their experiments smashing more particles together. I predict that there are going to be new particles detected that have behavior that will further change how modern scientists view the world.
I don't think we will completely solve the mind/body problem in 50 years. Who knows, maybe once we are able to create a teleportation device we'll finally understand matter and spirituality enough to answer that question, but I'm not completely sure how long it will take to create one. My guess is that it may take about 100 years before we are able to transport anything and maybe longer before we can transport people. I know photons can be transported now, but we have a long way to go.
I suppose I didn't really answer any of your questions. I only discussed them a bit.
Great topics and look forward to reading other replies! |

Moksha, why don't you try Future Life Progression? If you have never heard of this then give it a go. Anne Jirsch has written an interesting book about it where she teaches you to project yourself into the future so you can change the outcome of what you see. Some of her students have projected 100 years into the future and described what has developed. On her website she has a free MP3 download where she talks you into a deep meditative state.
