Nothing wrong with having sub thoughts during meditation.

The key is to not let them convince you to stop meditating. So its best to decide before the meditation that you are going to do so for say 15 or 40 minutes, and just let the thoughts come and go, and pay them no mind.

In fact a lot of people use meditation (including myself) to organize stray thoughts, or to let our sub conscious come to the front.

The idea of "No thought meditation" generally in a misunderstood concept and is not about not thinking, or not having thoughts but rather just not being led off your meditation by them.

Quieting the mind, easily. is what comes from "no thought meditation"
although quieting the mind, should be learned befor the meditation, or while learning the meditation. the book "astral dynamics" has a good method for learning this.

dear questor,

I had the same problem. I also have ADD. I bought a mantra CD and picked one mantra each night. I would say mantras for an hour or so. While saying the mantra with emotion over and over again i was able to reach deep meditation/trance without a problem.

Rolling Eyes I've been recently diagnosed with ADD myself and I have the same issues! As soon as I get one thought or idea to pass then its always trailed by another..grr..and I too thought at first that I should be striving to have a totally quiet mind..sorry, but for me, its impossible! My head never shuts up! So what I've learned to do is acknowledge the thought silently like this, "Oh yes, I forgot to schedule the vet appoinment, log it for monday." and let it pass on by like clouds in the sky. Naturally another is right behind it, but I find that if I acknowledge it then let it go until I'm in a position to make that call or write it down then the thoughts are less and less and they take less time away from my meditation focus. I also will concentrate strictly on my breaths. really pay attention to time taken to draw in the breath, holding it and exhaling it. This keeps my attention focused on something in the here and now and I dismiss all other thoughts that try to pry into my head... Very Happy best of luck!

Let me just start by saying that "YOU DON'T HAVE ADD". I used to think I had it, but then I realized that all kids are hyper. These goddamn psychrists (no thats not a misspeelling - a psychrist is a psychiatrist that thinks he's God), keep on saying that these kids are to fast, so we need to slow them down. How about these pill pushers take speed or crank so they can speed up...

Don´t worry. It is very common when you are barely learning to meditate that your thoughts interrupt. Just let them flow and your mind will clear slowly.

Another thing that you can do is buy or download guided meditations. Practice a lot with these and soon your mind will be clear. Very Happy

i also have ADD and ur right it does make it hard to meditate..
these are some things which have helped me..
find any type of music which helps u focus.. close your eyes and just relax..
let your mind take u whereever it wishes!
i have found that guided meditations do not work for me since i cant keep focus on them, but if u let ur mind run freely u still get the same effect and will often see some very amazing and beautiful things!
if just letting ur mind flow does not work, try starting it with a simple visualization (grounding or shielding for example) and then just let it flow from there..
for me it often starts out with darkness and then i start to see different colors... just keep going if u experience that.. after a while ull start seeing images, and things of that sort!

Im sure I could be considered to have Add.......But I dont believe it exhists. I believe the mind is a powerful tool, and there arent many flaws to boot. However I do have a short attention span (gemini) so When meditating I usually listen to soft ambience or sometthin of that sort. I always choose some sort of mantra for instance GOD IS LOVING , I have learned to Say the thought, see the words in my head, feel the thought, see the words again and that usually quiets me........The only time my "add" gets me in trouble is when i try to sleep.........ALL OF MY LIFE i have slept with the tv on........the distraction from the noise helps my brain quiet down..........IS THAt insane or what?!??!?!

Yea its really sad but I dont like the white noise so if I stay at a friends house or go away for the weekend and there is no tv.....I am doomed. I have to say part of it could be because I am 24 and afraid of the dark. And I dont mean Afraid as in scared of the Boogy man.....but to see all of energies and such floating around you with your eyes wide open is very weird to me. My boyfriend makes fun of me for it because if i am to sleep in complete dark and silence I have to go face down into the pillow and I end up squeezing the breath out of the poor guy......

The way I deal with thoughts is by sort of "changing frequencies". I take all of my thoughts, then change frequencies and think of a song. Then, i change frequencies again to a calming static. Then i change frequencies one last time and I do not hear, see, or think anything that I deem relevant to the session. With a bit of practice, you can just go straight to the last frequency.

I don't know if anyone here knows about this, but there is an exercise called "empath breathing" that I do to help me with concentration. Here's how you do it:

1. Find a quiet place to relax, preferably free of human voices.
2. Take a slow, deep breath through your nose, filling up your lungs from the bottom.
3. Hold that breath for 4 seconds.
4. Purse your lips and release that breath SLOWLY until your lungs are empty. Hold that for 4 more seconds.

Repeat that for a total of 10 times, and then you're done. Concentrate on your breathing, and imagine all other thoughts are gone. They don't exist.
