Ok , here are some questions for you

What are you attempting ?
What results do want ?
What practice regimen are you doing ?
How are these results supposed to manifest ?

Maybe you've given up by now, but if you haven't, I will try to help if I can.

I take it you're trying out completely new things and you're not sure if it's going to succeed or if you're any good at it so you convince yourself halfway through that it's all bogus and there's no way you can pull it off. It happens to a lot of people, even those with experience, because the only to know whether something works or not is to practice it yourself, which is a hard way of trying to learn some things.

If just concentration is your problem there are exercises to help your attention span, like staring at the second hand of a clock and nothing else, for as long as you can, and making your goal in the beginning one minute, then 2 minutes, then 5, 10, 15, 30, and 1 hour (when you fail you start over until you accomplish your goal).

My advice is to keep a record of all things you've succeeded in doing that you didn't think were possible - start making a list of what you remember doing and then build from there with your experiments. Try out a range of things, and see what you're better at, and keep notes as to what happened that day, what the weather was like, lunar cycles, etc. because certain things that you'll find out later may influence you (like your mood can go a long way, and a full moon may influence your mood).

Not only should you try to find what you're good at, or at least some kind of breakthrough, so you build confidence to do the other things, you should ask yourself from time to time why you really want to try out what you're trying out, like how will it help you, will it really make your life any better, would it be worth it even if you did do it, what would make it worth it; stuff like that. Also, accept what you think are your initial failures, log them, and keep practicing anyway. You may find that something you did was almost a success, that you were almost there, and it was your doubt that prevented it from occuring, or some other factor, but that you were so close.

Keep plugging away. The reason I say to ask the questions from time to time is that it helps you remember your mental drive to do it in the first place, but also helps you know what you can leave behind so you can focus on something more important to the goals of your life. (Also, it'd be good to know what those are)

Remember this, too - everything you do is intermixed with each other. Your personal life, your diet, your exercise, your magical life, your work life, and all the personas you adopt, will have effects on everything you do, and there will be times when some personas have to go on the back burner for a while so you can focus on something else, like school or family or whatever. As long as you're doing what you want with you're life, then you are the master of it. As long as you're happy you're mastering the Universe. It doesn't take special powers to appreciate the magic of everything. It doesn't matter if people call you normal or average or think you're a "muggle" - if you've mastered being who you wanted to become, then in your world you're the greatest wizard alive.

Some are born to run. Some are born for football. Some are born to play chess. Some are like Bo Jackson and are lucky enough to be good at more than one thing. Keep experimenting and you'll find whatever you're good at doing. Keep logs so you know what you're doing right and wrong (which is just a way of saying, "whatever works or doesn't work for you"), and keep in mind that it's not all that serious, nobody's going to be grading your progress, and it's only worth doing if it's fun.

Sometimes it helps to wait until you're drifting off to sleep. Your mind may be less likely to resist. You may be less likely to argue with yourself. Try taking some deep breaths after you lay down at night, and "day dream" that you already have what it is that you want. Imagine the feeling of happiness or whatever you'll be having when you get those things. Even if it's just for a minute, the more you practice the more you'll get better at it.

Empath breathing is an exercise that I do to help with concentration. Here's how you do it:

1. Find a quiet place to relax, preferably free of human voices.
2. Take a slow, deep breath through your nose, filling up your lungs from the bottom.
3. Hold that breath for 4 seconds.
4. Purse your lips and release that breath SLOWLY until your lungs are empty. Hold that for 4 more seconds.

Repeat that for a total of 10 times, and then you're done. Concentrate on your breathing, and imagine all other thoughts are gone. They don't exist.

Hope that helps!!

Nagai (spelling?) breathing is something I practiced in Yoga. It is a breath exercise that involves placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth to make your breathing seem much noisier to you when you breath through your nose. This audio cue helps give you something to focus on. Use it with any breathing pattern you choose. I personally like the 3 Part Breath.

If you're a more visual person (like me), you could also pick a symbol and "paint" it on whatever you're focusing on with your mind. Any symbol will do, really. Try something simple like a star or spiral.

If you are more of a kinetic-oriented person, try a handsign or pose, and focus on that. Again, any one will do, if you associate it with focus.

What works for you will depend upon how your mind orients. Try everything and see what works.

Also, I have a technique that I developed myself. (If someone got to it before me, sorry Very Happy ) It might help to try concentrating on nothing for a while. Like when you're meditating, most people are concentrating on something and ignoring the rest. I like to just ignore ALL thoughts, it really does help with concentration. I had a minor case of A.D.D., and I saw improvement within a week.

Hope that helps!

You might want to read the Power Of Concentration. There are plenty of exercises in the book. I think Atkinson wrote this one under the name of Dumont.

It's free online if you do a search.
