I'm also new here, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section...just point me the right way Razz

Anyway, I first tried meditation around October - November of last year, but it was just recently that I started really trying to get into it. But what does it feel like? Whenever I try, after a bit I feel almost like I'm dreaming and asleep, but I'm aware that I'm still awake. Is it supposed to feel that way? Or is it different for everyone?

About 30 minutes ago I tried again. This time I think that I may have actually fallen asleep (sitting up, hahah), because I heard and saw stuff and think that maybe it was a dream. It happened twice, the first time I saw someone sitting at a place that was perhaps a food court like at the mall. I can't recall his face or anything else really, because it was pretty vague and blurry. Anyway, I heard people talking in the background (again like you were in the mall), and I heard him talking to someone about how he had to work this weekend. It went away quickly. After a bit longer, it happened again, except this time with no pictures, only someone - but not the same person as earlier - talking about having to work this weekend. After that I just got up and stretched and wondered if I had just dozed off.

So was I just dreaming or am I - pretty much a beginner - "seeing" stuff? I think it's a dream, but...yeah. Thanks much.

I would suggest you search Amazon . They have three beginning meditation books , each of them under $10 .

As a first purchase , I would suggest Meditation For Dummies because I like the Dummies series . You might also look into the book " Meditation For Beginners ".

Hi Ferret Lady,

What you are describing is essentially "lucid dreaming"; that is, being aware that you are having a dream. It doesn't matter if the experience lasts for a few seconds or for hours - it is a lucid dream.

In Trancendental Meditation, the goal is always "pure awareness" - no dreaming; no visions; no "mind chatter"; nothing. Ordinarily it can take years of daily practice to achieve such results. And in my opinion, to what ends? You are able to meditate very deeply and remain awake and you have achieved great control over your consciousness. A very great deal of work for what?

I think it is much more practical and constructive (and less discouraging) to instead "go with the flow" of your brain and your meditation experiences. At first, you will have to contend with occasionally dozing off, with the mind chatter (random or intrusive seeming thoughts) and with the dreams or visions that don't seem to make any sense or to be of much use.

Eventually with regular practice, you will doze off less often, the mind chatter will ease and the dreams and visions will be less random and more coordinated and meaningful. The real breakthrough is when your creative self begins to suggest dreams, images or pictures that offer insight, allow you to solve problems or provide a different way to see the circumstances of your life. That is when you know that you are making significant progress!

Some suggestions from personal experience:

1) If you work hard during the day, meditating in the evening is likely to result in falling asleep because your body is tired. Evening meditations will work out better on days that you did not awaken very early and you had some opportunity to rest during the course of day.

2) Wait at least 30 minutes to an hour after after you awaken before meditating in the morning.

3) Never drink coffee or take energy stimulants just before meditating. Stimulants will hold your brainwaves and your heart rate at more rapid frequencies and prevent you from attaining complete relaxation with the Theta Brainwaves that are needed for deep meditation.

4) Brain entrainment sounds are very helpful. You can download a computer program known as "Brainwave Generator" that you can use to create a 20 to 60 minute "entrainment program". Getting this right will require some research and experimentation on your part.

CAUTIONARY NOTE: Anyone prone to Epilepsy or who experiences dizziness or disorientation from strobe lights should avoid using any Brainwave Entrainment devices including "Mind Flight" Machines!

As far as "your experience may vary..." absolutely yes! No one should assume that their meditation experiences will go according to the "textbook models". I have encountered rare individuals who can reach incredibly deep levels of meditation in minutes and I have met people so nervous and restless that I had to employ special techniques to help them relax. Meditation is a VERY PERSONAL THING!

The most important thing is to be persistent!

Best Wishes,

Derestanne.

Hi Ferret lady

The first part- "asleep yet aware" is very much one of the classic altered states one gets in meditation. Alpha brain waves make you very focused like that.

Some folks fall asleep while meditating, because they're over-tired or because they're not used to feeling that relaxed. If you have problems that way( and, gosh, I've been there.) , try holding a ball or other item in your hand. If you start to nod off, the ball will drop, bringing you back up, and. longterm, improving your holding the balance between meditation and sleep

And if you can't, you may need more naps Very Happy

Finally, sounds like you may have had a bit of out of body experience there. To check this, next time this happens, try to go to someone you know and see what they're doing, so you can check whether you've been out and about later on ( you don't have to tell them you're careening through astral space- you can say you tried to call at such a time and they'll usually say "I was .... but I didn't hear a phone ring)

And I do like the Dummies books too.

Hope that helps
