Ulcerative Colitis is a currently incurable disease. The immune system attacks the large intestine, or colon, causing bleeding ulcers to form and for the large intestine to swell. It causes pain, internal bleeding, diarrhea, constipation, and other things.
So far, there are treatments (which usually work pretty well, but people still have times when they get "flare-ups") but no practical cure. Doctors say that one is on its way, and perhaps within my lifetime it will come. The only current mainstream-medical definitive cure is removing the colon and replacing it with a bag. It goes without saying that this is usually worse than the disease itself and is usually only used to save someone's life.
I have this disease, and quite frankly, it sucks. I'd like to know if anyone knows of any actual cures (not treatments, mind you; my meds work fine for that) that for one reason or another medical researchers haven't tried. Thanks! |
