I have recently developed my views on the metaphysical/magic, but I feel I have been working with them all along. I wrote the following essay that sums up some of my most recent thoughts on the matter. Please give me your thoughts:

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
- John Lennon

I was raised an atheist. This song resonated with me because I interpreted it through an atheist lens – one should respect humanity for the sake of humanity as opposed to for some god or entry into heaven / fear of hell. I still think there is much to be said for that, but now I think there is also a deeper sense of spiritualism to the song. There is a higher self – a human consciousness that transcends the individual – that to me “living life in peace”, “sharing all the world”, and “living as one” refers to. We are more than just materialist creatures, even though that can seem foggy when one lives in a materialistic society. I live in the United States of America, and I have not at this point in my life traveled to other countries. I know that here in the US we have a certain freedom of ideas, but it seems that there is certain political correctness that comes with that, so it is not considered normal to interject mystical ideas into daily life. We are told to respect others’ beliefs, but what does that really mean? I think the implied meaning is: don’t talk about them too deeply. It seems acceptable to ask what someone’s faith is, for instance, but to ask someone what they think about god or the meaning of life might be too personal or inappropriate for normal chit chat. But a simple fact is: we are all human. What we have in common transcends our differing beliefs. We are part of an even broader miracle called life, which has evolved to think, question, and have consciousness. When I say evolve I might be imposing a very human centric notion of what that means, because with our limited perception time seems linear. There may indeed be many nonlinear processes at work in the universe along with parallel universes. Modern physics has opened the door to some questions of reality that are truly bizarre from the standpoint of what we are able to perceive. However, I think we tend to limit our perceptions out of a need to get by with our day to day lives. Back to the human spirit: our day to day struggle in the material world can impose limits on the connection to the human spirit. I do not propose that I have broken free of that, rather, I feel that I am on a quest to strengthen that connection. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

Imagination and Magic

I feel that the imagination is a portal to the metaphysical realm. Everyone uses their imagination, thus everyone has access to this great magic. You needn’t be a Tibetan monk or a seasoned spiritual guru to have access to the magic, although you could argue that some people have devoted more energy to harnessing their magic. Just like everyone is physically unique, everyone possesses a unique blend of magic. This may be the same idea as an aura – but I have a limited knowledge on New Age terminology. I have had these ideas off and on throughout my life but I usually file it under “maybe this could be true, but it is not knowable information so no need to dwell on it”. I have more critically about the metaphysical (magical) realm and I have concluded that is something that works together with the physical world. It is a constant interwoven cycle. Your imagination, magic, and physical reality all inform one another. Magic can be fueled through human interaction. This can be done through imaginative performance such as a musical performance or even through simply saying hello to someone in their presence. But what is the purpose of the magic? The magic is the creative life force – its purpose is to keep us connected on a higher level. What about the intentions of the individual? Although everyone has their own intentions which may or may not be in harmony with others, the higher magic (the etheric realm) shared by all life has a purity to it. One might use magic for purely selfish or even destructive purposes, but since this is not the true purpose of magic, such acts would not help one to achieve a higher consciousness. Leaders who view themselves as heroes yet oppress or kill masses of people during their rule have found a way to make a great connection with one group of people at the expense of another. I think such leaders have a powerful imagination and access to magic but have lost a sense of the greater purpose – they have no sense of the unity of life. Perhaps there is good magic and evil magic. If so, I have faith that the good is in the lead despite all of the genocides, war, and oppression that we have been through. We continue to grow in number. This alone may not be relevant to good vs. evil, because you can have a larger and larger population of people that still are selfish for the most part and hence could self-destruct at any time. But given our growing numbers, there is proportionally less violence than at other times in history. (This of course depends on what time and society you are considering; I would need to research this further). You might say this is due to the institution of education. Education allows us with a vehicle to pass down culture and better communicate with those of other cultures. But how did education evolve? How was it thought up in the first place? Magic. I’m not proposing that there is this force going around putting ideas in our heads – as stated earlier, the physical realm (e.g., someone’s brain) is working together with the magic to form reality. And, reality is perceived differently by each individual as each individual possesses their own form of magic. Given that there is a higher consciousness, why do certain individuals engage in such evil acts? Why do societies as a whole promote processes that oppress individuals and deter human creativity? Perhaps there is a strong magic force used for evil purposes. People get locked into patterns that can carry out evil processes. For example, consider a large corporation that exploits people daily. Such a corporation was magically created through the imaginations of several, and its day to day processes are carried out for the most part in the physical realm. Those who work for the corporation may either be blind to the corruption or just choose not to put too much thought into it, as long as it does not impact their own life. So are the good forces more powerful than the evil forces? In this example, it appears that evil is in the lead, because most of the employees working for the corporation may have good intentions but are ultimately working for an evil cause. This brings me back to the question of whether good is prevailing. I do have faith that humans are inherently good despite our evil behaviors, and I additionally have faith that there is good data to support this but I would need to do extensive research to do so. I am getting wrapped up in the idea of good and evil because I feel it is very important when discussing the potential of magic. Since magic is a powerful force, we need to be very careful of how it is used.
