Hello all. I would like some advice on how deal with negativity from other people. I try my best to be positive and upbeat so that i am able to help manifest the things that i want in my life. The problem is i work all day with several people who are always very negative. They dont necessarily direct any comments at me but just being arounfvthem is enough. Im sure you know the type of people i mean. I try to distance myself from them but i have to work with them daily and it wears on me. How do you keep others ngativity from bringing you down and influencing your own thoughts and emotions? Thanks![/quote] |

we've all been there. the nazi concentration camps have something of use to tell us regarding this. many people died in there, as you already know. there were others who survived their ordeals though. it mainly had to do with attitude. many took the attitude of "these people are so mean!" while others had an attitude along the lines of "i may not be physically free, but i'll always be free in my mind!" that sort of thing. through adversity, we get to show our true strengths. there are many beliefs you can adopt. one of them might be that everybody else lives life backwards. they seek to blame and ridicule. the kingdom of God is within. all power is within you. those negative people are the way they are because they know no better. "father forgive them for they know not what they do". rise above the pettiness and argumentations inherent in daily life. life is best lived inside-out, not outside-in. as bashar says "circumstances don't matter, only my state of being matters". if you get a chance to listen to it, i highly recommend paul mckenna's positivity collection. have fun |

Sometimes I wonder if negative people get something out of pouring their negativity on others or if they try to anger me on purpose? What to do then? Practice silence? |

Just let them know that talking and thinking about negative things, they will bring upon negative people, circumstances onto themselves.
If that doesnt help, practice silence. I faced the same situation, not at work, but with relatives, etc. I found that hanging around them and listening to their negative and cynical comments took a toll on me and ruined my day. I withdrew and cut contact cause I thought it was the best thing to do...oh and practiced silence. I've never been better. I conserve energy and dont let it affect me anymore. I'm more focused now and not mentally drained.
If it gets really bad, change your job.
I've found that its so much better to withdraw from certain people who are negative to live a more fullfilled life. Some people will seep their negativity onto others to feel better. Its better to get rid of them tactfully. In your case, since you are in the workplace, practicing silence is the best strategy. |

I am a high school teacher for "at risk" teens, so I deal with negativity a plenty. I know it is different because they are not adults and my role as a teacher would be different from a role as a coworker. I always need to remind myself that even though my students may try to bring me down, they desparately need a stable positive role model, even though they probably don't think so. But I admit it does wear on me and I often daydream about a different line of work. |
