People round here think i'm some kind of nutter anyway so I wouldn't be bothered if it got out I was a witch. I don't tell people because mainly people are ignorant about it and laugh at you and I don't like my religion being mocked (unless it's by Monty Python).

I don't yet have any children but that is another worrying thing that they can take your children away. I think they are more careful about it now than they have been in the past as they've made some terrible screw ups, but the thought I'll be watched more closely if I'm known to be Pagan bothers me.

I have been actively Pagan for 40 years and it is only in the last 10 that I have had any problems. I've always been 'out'- even attended an Alpha Course wearing my pentacle in plain sight.

I don't hide what I am, if folks don't like me because of their prejudices it's their loss, not mine. In the main, I don't get much of a problem. I think that in Britain we are luckier than those in the States, as people here are more accepting of what they see as 'eccentricity'. We do not have a written Constitution as you do in the States, but you get far more trouble from mainstream Christianity than we do.

Perhaps it is time for U.S. Pagans to take a stand for your Constitutional Rights.

Some of the most powerful witches and wizards revel in the aspect of "hiding."

Also, there is something about "going public" that can have a cheapening effect -- maybe?

The big thing is: What is the reason for going public? What does it do for you?

A lot depends on motivation and what one wants to accomplish.

I wouldn't call it 'going public', just not being ashamed to admit what I am.
