Time Warp

The ATV kicked up a mountainous wall of spray as we sped across the prehistoric swamp in a desperate attempt to outrun our pursuers. “Can’t we go any faster,” I yelled as Gigi zig zagged around rocks trying to stay upright. “If I do, I won’t be able to control this damn thing. We’re doing about 40 mph now. Just let me drive,” she shouted! Chasing us was a pack of ferocious Utahraptors. Coincidently we were just reading about them at the museum in Salt Lake City.

With white knuckles squeezing the side handles, I turned my head to see how close they were. It was hard enough hanging on while riding in the flat desert, but we were bouncing over rocks in the middle of a watery wasteland. “You’ll have to go faster Gigi, they’re gaining on us.” “I’m heading for those boulders over there on our left. We can’t outrun them in this soup,” she said.

Squeezing hard on the brake handles, she slid the vehicle sideways to the base of the rock formation. Quickly we climbed some thirty feet to the top. The frenzied Raptors were snapping and clawing at us as we rolled over the edge. “I wonder how high these things can jump. Hope they don’t find another way up here,” I said. “Just get that force field up,” she demanded, with a quiver in her voice.

Concentrating under duress wasn’t my preference but, alternatives were rather limited at the moment. However, within a few seconds I was invoking the power of spirit and an impenetrable dynamic wall of energy immediately surrounded us. The force field was up and functioning just as the Raptors found their way to the top of the rock formation. Closing in for the kill, they hit the energy configuration at full speed.

Whump, whump. A bone crunching sound as they collided with the invisible barrier. Time and again they slammed into the wall. Dazed by the energy field, they shook their ugly heads trying to loose the annoying vexation, but it didn’t dissuade them. After what seemed an eternity, they finally staggered away, dejected and confused. Descending from our position, they spotted some unfortunate creature in the waves of grass and once again were in hot pursuit of some tasty morsel.

Although there was no way to determine, it seemed only hours ago that we had parked our truck in the Utah desert, loaded our gear on the ATV with extra gasoline, and on our way to a Spanish treasure site ten miles away. We had made plans to locate the cache after satisfying ourselves that it was a viable effort. Driving for about an hour we stopped to break out the canteens.

While stretching our legs and scanning the mountains just ahead to get our bearings, I remember a loud humming sound reverberating in our ears. Trying to determine from which direction it was coming, I turned around just as the opaque whirling mass enveloped the ATV, and then us. We were mesmerized, unable to speak or move. Everything became a blur and we lost all sense of time and geographical orientation.

The next moment of awareness found us standing in two inches of water surrounded by miles of wetlands dotted with occasional rock formations. The entire swamp was fringed by dense tropical forests. We surmised that we had been caught in some kind of time warp, but believed we were in the same geographical location.

Through the corner of her eye Gigi saw some movement at the edge of the forest. Seconds later several mean looking dinosaurian creatures started running toward us through the marsh. She cranked up the ATV, I hopped on the back and we got out of there fast.

Now, back on the rock formation, with the immediate threat of Utahraptors diminished, I allowed the force field to dissipate. Much energy is required to keep it operational. We stretched out on the rocks to relax frazzled nerves the best we could, and coordinate our thoughts. According to the information at the museum, Utahraptors lived in this area over a hundred million years ago. What’s going on here? We hadn’t had time to think about anything since we arrived in this hell. God only knows what other monstrosities are lurking out there.

I asked Gigi to keep a lookout while I went down to the ATV to retrieve our food and equipment. This rock pile appears to be the safest place around for the moment. Later we could discuss what to do next. It was a piece of cake going down the same way the Raptors retreated. Walking through the narrow ravine, I noticed that with a little effort we could block the passage with boulders, and wouldn’t have to worry about the Raptors climbing back up.

The ATV was no worse for the wear. The five gallon gas can was still full and the marsh water seemed potable. Recovering what we needed, I retraced my steps to the top. A quick inventory revealed food for about two days, if we were careful. I wonder how dinosaur tastes? Included among the items were matches, two flashlights with batteries, a hunting knife, two tin cups, two small pots, a blanket and other miscellaneous items.

Gigi scouted around for something to use as a lever to pry some boulders into the ravine. Finding a small tree trunk lodged in the rocks, we effectively closed the trail to any curious visitors. The top of the rock formation was flat, with several depressions we could use as shelter.

The sun was low on the horizon now and it would soon be dark. Our first day in this new world was exciting I must say. Gigi lit a fire with some of the wood scattered about, and was doing well considering the circumstances. Sitting by the firelight, we listened to the eerie sounds of this prehistoric world. The occasional pitiful scream of some unfortunate critter that had fallen prey, pierced the night. Looking up at the starlit heaven, we realized how much different it was than our own. We talked for awhile, wondering if, or when we would ever return home, then slowly fell asleep.

The morning greeted us with horrible screams in the marsh just below. Cautiously peering over the edge between some rocks we saw five Utahraptors bringing down an Iguanodon, a four ton plant eating dinosaur. According to the museum documents it was a contemporary of the Utahraptor, living in the same area. The viciousness of the Raptors was terrifying as they slashed the dinosaur to shreds with their eight inch claws and tearing away large chunks of flesh with their massive teeth.

We watched as they endlessly engorged themselves on the hapless giant. Eventually, one by one, they sauntered back to shore and into the forest. I would wait for awhile, then go down and retrieve some of the meat to replenish our food supply. Careful not to make noise or sudden movements, I worked my way around the boulders to the carcass. There wasn’t much left after they finished, but still plenty for us. Wrapping some meat in an old shirt, I started back to the rock.

Suddenly, it rose from behind a large boulder. What? A Utahraptor! It roared a terrifying sound and leaped to within a few feet of me. I tried to run but, while jumping over the decimated remains I tripped on some dangling flesh and fell face down in the water. The last thing I heard was Gigi’s distant voice crying “we’re fading”, we’re fading”. In the next instant we found ourselves back in the Utah desert along with our atv and supplies. I’m still shaking my head over this one.
