The philosopher's stone is silver ore (or so sources say. Google it). It is believed to hold the key to alchemy.
As in the anime, alchemy is the study of change. It follows similar teachings to other magic, such as a "tier" of existence from lower forms to higher forms.
Alchemy takes two primary routes based on its goals. . . Western alchemy was primarily for profit, turning lead into gold and the like, and had some emphasis on health and medicine. Eastern alchemy, on the other hand, had a high emphasis on healing and immortality, with some emphasis on profit (as a historical note, it was a Chinese alchemist who invented gunpowder. He mixed honey, sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate together and heated them, in an effort to make a potion for immortality. He narrowly escaped death by immolation from the resulting fire.)
Alchemy is not my area of expertise, but it's about inducing the evolution of a lower form to a higher form, be it a simple stone transforming into a diamond, or a man transforming into a god. But there is no single object granting limitless power to change the world.

ah. hahahahaha! you must realize, you still must have the philosophers stone, befor you can turn lead into gold. and the stone itself is perfect unity , thus it perfects all els. thus lead into gold is their example.

Yes indeed the philosophers stone exists. You can read my story "The Philosophers stone" for my personal experience with it.

I believe it does.
I'm currently reading The Philosopher's Stone by Joseph P. Farrell... he gives a lot of evidence for it.

Yes, the philosopher's stone does exist. Not so much a stone but crystalline in nature, the average person would perceive it as a chalk substance, or stone.
Alchemy is the process of transformation, the true application is the transformation of the alchemist as they feed themselves with the manna derived from the philosopher's stone. Once the saturation is at a high enough level the alchemist can ascend.
