At any rate they're not too reliable unless you can specifically isolate a spirit. Boarda tend to act as the chat room of the other side. You may believe it's a young girl but you could be chatting with the spirit an overweight forty year old man. And on occassion something darker.

I guess the question is meant to be specific. Such as are there any rites or rituals needed to be preformed once I make the board to get it to work properly? I appreciate the information on the basic function.

Yeah that should be done anytime any energy or spirit work is done or, anything else thats bound to grab evil spirits' attention. The more performed at higher levels will attract more powerful dark beings. Spirit boards are pretty low on the chain.

something a witch told me is that you should have a white candle burning placed the length away of the tallest person who is in the room from the board. it's supposed to be a protection against malevolent spirits

If it were charged maybe but most people playing with them don't quite use or understand proper protection. It's like web surfin w.o a fire wall, you're basically asking for somethin to go wrong.

A single white candle placed at any distance will not have any protective qualities whatsoever, no more than any random object placed any random distance from anything else.
The key is to specificaly charge the candle, as SOL12 said, for protection and to only allow positive and good spirits to enter within the illuminated area of the candle, but be sure to banish afterwards, before you extinguish the candle, as negative spirits can gather just outside the lit area in eager anticipation...

As i said, it was what was told to me by a witch so it's not in my personal experience.
I just put up a filtration barrier that allows only those that are of positive energy to pass through.
