“Put that down!” laughed Rachel. She was watching her son, Turlan, curiously inspecting a hornets nest. Turlan had seen it fall and he had picked it up, gleefully cackling as hornets buzzed to and fro in confusion.
The hornets had a sort of understanding amongst themselves. As Turlan was the successor of King Pitlan, Turlan should never be touched. This seemed sensible as the hornets were only allowed in the kingdom of Trachita with the King's permission.
On this day, however, the hornets decided to make an exception. Turlan immediately responded by stretching out both arms, palms facing downward and mouthing the word “Up!” The ground beneath Turlan began to shudder and bolts of golden lightning began to shoot upwards until his hands glowed like the summer sun. In that same instant, Turlan drew his arms in towards his chest before thrusting them upwards and then out and down in an arc.
In less than half a second, Turlan had erected an impenetrable shield around himself.
Rachel squealed in delight and started to jump up and down. So like his father, she thought.
Turlan had learned about the shield of Kabur, from watching Pitlan do it. Pitlan had also been clear, that if ever Turlan needed to use the shield, the word used was irrelevant. It was the intent behind the word that mattered the most. Pitlan stressed that the word “donkey” was just as good as any other. This made Turlan wonder what would happen if he used “ass”.
At 6 years old, Turlan was starting to wonder about lots of things.
